The roughly 2.8 billion of the world's people who live on less than $2 per day are disproportionately affected by worsening environmental conditions. Every year, between 5 and 6 million people in developing countries die from air pollution and water-borne diseases, such as malaria and diarrhoea. Environmental degradation is seriously undermining the ability of the poor to eke out a living from natural resources. The poor are particularly vulnerable to disasters, such as storms, droughts and landslides that might have been exacerbated-even caused- by people's actions.

   Education can awaken communities to the dangers facing their health and their environment. It can develop local capacities to understand and analyze such situations, and promote the full and conscious participation of people whose behaviour must change if they are to sustain and protect themselves, and the natural resources upon which they depend.

   But there is a scarcity of appropriate learning materials in the developing world. This is the gap that OUTREACH is striving to help fill. Over the last 15 years, OUTREACH has produced and distributed more than a hundred theme packs of copyright-free educational resources on environment and health issues to over 900 organizations in the developing world. But the demand for our packs far outnumbers the supply.
